Office 2024 System Requirements: What Your PC or Mac Needs
Office 2024 is not demanding software. Microsoft lists a 1.1 GHz or faster two-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 4 GB of free disk space and a 1280 x 768 display for Windows, plus the same 4 GB of RAM with 10 GB of free disk space and a 1280 x 800 display on Mac. Hardware acceleration on Windows needs a Direct3D 9.1 or higher graphics adapter with a WDDM 1.3 or higher driver. Supported operating systems are Windows 11 on PC and the three most recent versions of macOS on Mac. Those are the minimums, not a recommendation — and they are enough to answer the question most buyers actually have: will this install and run on the machine in front of me?

These figures come from Microsoft's published system requirements for Office 2024, which covers the consumer editions, and for Office LTSC 2024, which covers commercial and government editions. Both documents are the reference to check when a machine is borderline, and Microsoft updates them over time. Everything below unpacks what each row actually means when you are standing in front of a real PC or Mac.
These are minimums, not recommendations
A machine can clear every row in the table and still feel slow, because Microsoft publishes a floor rather than a target. Four gigabytes of RAM is the entry point, and Windows itself claims a meaningful share of that before a spreadsheet is open. Four gigabytes of free disk space is what Office asks for, not a licence to run a machine that is almost full. If your PC sits exactly at the minimum, it will install and it will start — but adding memory or freeing disk space is what turns an acceptable machine into a comfortable one.
How to check your machine before you buy
Checking takes about two minutes on either platform, and it is the only way to turn the table above into a yes or no answer for your specific hardware.
- On Windows, open Settings, go to System, then About. That panel lists the processor, installed RAM, system type (32-bit or 64-bit) and your Windows edition and build.
- On Mac, click the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. It shows the chip or processor, memory, and the macOS version you are running.
- Check free disk space in File Explorer or Finder rather than total capacity. The requirement is space available, and installers fail well before the drive reports zero free.
- Write down the Windows edition or the macOS version and compare both against the table. The operating system is the requirement that quietly disqualifies the most machines.
Windows requirements in detail
Processor, memory and storage
On Windows, Microsoft asks for a 1.1 GHz or faster two-core processor, 4 GB of RAM and 4 GB of available disk space. Any ordinary desktop or laptop sold in the last decade clears that comfortably. The storage figure is worth reading twice: it is space Office requires, not a total disk size, so a 128 GB drive with 3 GB free does not qualify. Some features also expect .NET 3.5 or 4.6 or higher to be installed.
Graphics and display
The display requirement is 1280 x 768 screen resolution, and a 64-bit version of Office is required for 4K and higher resolutions. Graphics hardware acceleration requires a Direct3D 9.1 or higher graphics adapter with a WDDM 1.3 or higher graphics driver. This is a driver requirement rather than a dedicated-card requirement: a machine that shipped with Windows 11 normally already satisfies it. If animations or on-screen drawing look wrong, an out-of-date graphics driver is the first thing to update, not Office itself.
Which Windows versions are supported
Microsoft's system requirements list Windows 11 as the supported operating system for Office 2024 on Windows, and note that for ARM-based devices Windows 11 is the minimum supported operating system. Windows 10 is a special case worth being precise about: Microsoft states that Windows 10 was supported only until October 14, 2025. If a machine is still on an older Windows build, the realistic fix is the operating system rather than the Office licence, and our Windows 10 vs Windows 11 comparison covers the upgrade question in full. For a new or unsupported PC, licensing Windows itself is the next step — our Windows 11 Home activation key for one PC is the entry point, and you can browse the wider Microsoft Windows licence range if you need an edition with more features.
Mac requirements in detail
Intel and Apple Silicon
Microsoft publishes no clock speed or core count for the Mac version. The stated requirement is an Intel or Apple Silicon Mac, as supported by the three most recent versions of macOS. In practice that means any Mac still running a currently supported macOS qualifies, whether it is Intel-based or one of the Apple Silicon machines. As new major versions of macOS become generally available, Microsoft drops support for the oldest version and supports the newest and the previous two, so the macOS version on your Mac matters as much as the hardware inside it.
Storage, display and graphics
Mac needs 4 GB of RAM, 10 GB of available disk space and a 1280 x 800 screen resolution. Note the difference from Windows: the Mac requirement is 10 GB of free space rather than 4 GB, and there are no graphics requirements at all. The current version of Edge, Safari, Chrome or Firefox is supported, and .NET does not apply. Give the Mac version extra headroom on storage — 10 GB is comfortably above the Windows figure and still a small fraction of any modern drive.
Which Office 2024 licence covers a Mac
Office Home & Business 2024 installs on one PC or one Mac, not both at once, and it includes classic versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook. The Office 2024 Home and Business key for Windows and Mac covers that consumer case. Office 2024 for Mac installs from the standard Apple package format, the same technology used for previous perpetual Mac releases, so the install flow is the familiar one.
Office LTSC 2024 system requirements for business
Office LTSC 2024 is the on-premises release for commercial and government customers, and its hardware needs are effectively identical to the consumer edition on Windows: a 1.1 GHz or faster two-core processor, 4 GB of RAM, 4 GB of free disk space and a 1280 x 768 display. On Mac there are no graphics requirements and the display figure is 1280 x 768 as well. What differs is the operating system support list, which is considerably wider, and the update model.
- Supported on Windows 11, Windows 11 LTSC 2024, Windows 10 LTSC 2021, Windows 10 LTSC 2019, Windows Server 2025 and Windows Server 2022.
- Office LTSC for Mac 2024 is supported on the three most recent versions of macOS.
- Security and quality updates are published over the internet but can be hosted on-premises for disconnected networks. LTSC 2024 receives no new features after release.
- LTSC 2024 includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Access on Windows. It does not include Publisher, which Microsoft is retiring in 2026.
Because LTSC supports volume operating systems, it is a common fit for organisations running long-life Windows builds. Our Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 key for five PCs and the Office 2024 Pro Plus LTSC key for 100 PCs cover the small-team and larger-fleet cases, and our Windows 11 LTSC explainer covers the matching long-term Windows releases.
32-bit or 64-bit Office?
Office 2024 and Office LTSC 2024 both support 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows, and Office 2024 for Mac continues to support 64-bit. Two practical points follow. First, a 64-bit version of Office is required if you work on a 4K or higher resolution display, so check your resolution before choosing. Second, Microsoft recommends 64-bit on devices with 4 GB of memory or more, which is every machine that meets the requirements above. You can see which architecture your PC uses in the System type field of the Windows About panel.
What Office 2024 does not include
Hardware compatibility is only half the question, so it is worth being clear about the other half. Office suites for individuals and families are a one-time purchase covering a single PC or Mac. They do not include the Microsoft 365 services such as OneDrive, Exchange Online or SharePoint Online, and they do not include cloud-backed features such as PowerPoint Designer or data types in Excel. One-time purchases also have no upgrade option, so moving to the next major release means buying again at full price. Our guide to buying Microsoft Office without a subscription covers that decision, and everything we licence sits in the Microsoft Office category.
If the machine passes the spec check but you are still choosing between Home & Business, Professional Plus or an LTSC edition, our Office 2024 editions comparison breaks down what each one includes. For a single Windows PC, the Office 2024 Professional Plus key for one PC is the direct match to a machine that meets these requirements.
Why activation fails on a machine that meets the specs
Plenty of Office 2024 problems are not hardware problems at all. Almost all of them come down to connectivity, accounts or the operating system.
- Internet access is required to install, to redeem and associate the copy of Office with your Microsoft account or device ID, to activate apps such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint, and periodically afterwards to keep them activated. Office 2024 is therefore not a solution for fully disconnected environments.
- A Microsoft account or organizational account is required for licence assignment, so a locked-down or shared machine without one will stall at the activation step.
- The Windows build installs with Click-to-Run and installs to the system drive, typically the C: drive. The installation location cannot be changed, so a nearly full system drive is a common failure.
- Multitouch features need a touch-enabled device, though every feature remains available through a keyboard, mouse or other standard input device.
If the failure is the operating system rather than Office, that is a Windows licensing and edition question. The Microsoft Windows category lists the editions we license, and it is worth resolving before you troubleshoot Office itself.
Support dates: how long Office 2024 stays supported
The consumer version of Office 2024 is supported under the Modern Lifecycle Policy, and Office 2024 for Mac goes out of support on October 9, 2029. Office LTSC 2024 is supported under the Fixed Lifecycle Policy with five years of support, and also goes out of support on October 9, 2029. Set against that, Windows 10 itself was supported only until October 14, 2025 — which means an Office 2024 licence bought for a Windows 10 machine is being bought for an operating system Microsoft has already ended support on. That is the strongest practical argument for pairing an Office purchase with a supported Windows licence.
Checklist before you buy
- Processor at 1.1 GHz or faster with two cores or better (Windows).
- 4 GB of RAM or more, with more if you keep large spreadsheets open.
- 4 GB of free disk space on Windows, 10 GB on Mac, with room to spare on the system drive.
- Windows 11, or a Mac on one of the three most recent versions of macOS. Intel or Apple Silicon both qualify.
- A Microsoft account ready for licence assignment, and an internet connection for installation and activation.
- 64-bit Office if your display is 4K or higher.
If your machine clears the list, the remaining question is only which edition you need. Every Office licence we sell is listed in the Microsoft Office category, and the full range of keys we license sits under Microsoft on Bigbl. Check the specs first, then pick the edition — it is a much cheaper order than discovering an unsupported Windows build after the key has been activated.
