Office LTSC vs Professional Plus: Which One-Time License Do You Need?
Office LTSC 2024 and Office Professional Plus 2024 both look like the same deal: a perpetual Microsoft Office licence for Windows that you pay for once and keep. They are not the same product. LTSC is Microsoft's frozen, organisation-facing release that stops taking feature updates after launch. Professional Plus 2024 is the professional edition of the current one-time-purchase line. Every key we stock is listed on the Microsoft Office category page, so you can check the exact device coverage before you order.
The confusion is understandable: both names end in 2024, both include Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word, and both are one-time purchases rather than subscriptions. What actually changes your experience is the update model, the licensing and activation route, and a handful of apps and extras that ship with one and not the other.
The short answer
| Question | Office LTSC 2024 | Office Professional Plus 2024 |
|---|---|---|
| Who is it built for? | Organisations with volume licensing agreements, including regulated or restricted environments that cannot take feature updates | Individual users, small businesses and small teams buying a one-time-purchase key |
| Feature updates after launch? | None. The feature set stays fixed at release | No upgrade path to the next major release either, but the 2024 generation ships current at purchase |
| How you activate | Key Management Service (KMS) or Multiple Activation Key (MAK) | Product key plus Microsoft account activation |
| Support lifecycle | Five years of Mainstream Support, then no Extended Support | The consumer one-time-purchase line is supported under the Modern Lifecycle Policy |
Read the first row as the real decision point. If you are licensing machines as part of an organisation's IT programme, LTSC is the channel Microsoft built for exactly that. If you are buying Office for yourself or a handful of machines, Professional Plus 2024 is the product that matches how you actually buy.
What Office LTSC 2024 actually is
LTSC stands for Long Term Service Channel. Microsoft describes Office LTSC 2024 as the most recent on-premises edition of Office, intended for highly regulated or restricted environments that cannot take feature updates, and sold to organisations through volume licensing agreements. It is the same 2024 app generation delivered with a different servicing promise: the product is frozen at launch.
That is the whole idea behind the channel. Microsoft ships it for locked-down or disconnected environments where a mid-cycle feature change could break a macro, shift a document layout or alter an approval workflow. If you already deploy the volume channel, staying on a fixed version is a deliberate stability choice rather than an oversight. If you are still weighing perpetual against subscription in general, our guide to buying Office without a subscription covers that side separately.
LTSC is not a cheaper Microsoft 365
One thing to clear up immediately: Office LTSC 2024 does not include Microsoft 365. Microsoft's documentation is explicit that a one-time Office purchase includes none of the Microsoft 365 services, and that LTSC users do not get the real-time collaboration, AI-driven automation or cloud-backed security and compliance features available with Microsoft 365 Apps. There is no Copilot in either perpetual product.
What Office Professional Plus 2024 is
Professional Plus 2024 is the professional-grade edition of Microsoft's 2024 one-time-purchase Office line, the same family as Office Home 2024 and Office Home & Business 2024. Microsoft describes Office 2024 as classic desktop apps bought once with no upgrade option, so moving to the next major release means buying again at full price.
If you are choosing between editions rather than channels, our Office 2024 editions comparison covers what Home, Home & Business and Professional Plus each include. The short version for this article: Professional Plus is the one to pick when you want the full professional app set and you are buying a key for a specific machine or a small, fixed group of machines.
Where the two are identical
- Both are perpetual, one-time purchases. You are not signing up for a renewal.
- Both include the same core 2024 desktop apps: Word, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and, on Windows, Access.
- Both are installed with Microsoft's Click-to-Run technology rather than the older Windows Installer.
- Both continue to support Visual Basic for Applications, so existing macros keep working.
So if your only question is whether you get Word and Excel with no subscription attached, the answer is yes either way.
The differences that actually matter
1. Feature updates stop at launch for LTSC
This is the defining difference, and everything else follows from it. Office LTSC 2024 does not receive any new features after its release. Microsoft still issues security and quality updates, and for organisations with disconnected networks those updates can be hosted internally, but the application itself does not change shape. Professional Plus 2024 has no path to the next major release either, so in practice both products end up static. The difference is timing: LTSC is frozen from day one, Professional Plus 2024 starts current.
2. Licensing and activation
Office LTSC 2024 is sold to organisations through volume licensing, and the activation process for volume-licensed Office is unchanged from earlier LTSC releases: you activate with Key Management Service or a Multiple Activation Key. Because deployment is handled centrally, one licence can front an entire device estate. Professional Plus 2024 keys activate like any other one-time purchase, with a product key and Microsoft account activation on the machine itself. That is why you will find LTSC sold in multi-device packs such as the Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 key for 5 PCs and the Office 2024 Pro Plus LTSC key covering 100 PCs, while the Professional Plus line is sold per machine with the 1 PC Professional Plus key and a 5 PC Professional Plus key for small teams.
3. Apps and extras that differ
Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 includes Access, Excel, OneNote, Outlook, PowerPoint and Word, with Skype for Business available as an optional install during setup. Publisher is not included with Office LTSC 2024. Four LTSC-specific details are worth knowing before you commit:
- Publisher is omitted. Microsoft states plainly that Publisher is not included with Office LTSC 2024 and will not be supported after October 2026, so give any existing Publisher files a migration plan.
- Teams is not preinstalled. The Teams app is a separate download with Office LTSC 2024.
- Publish to Power BI has been removed from Excel in LTSC. Microsoft moved that workflow to the Power BI service, so test it before a rollout.
- ActiveX controls are disabled by default in Office LTSC 2024, though IT administrators can re-enable them where required.
Side-by-side comparison

| New features after launch | None | None, and no upgrade option to the next major release |
| Security and quality updates | Yes | Yes |
| Fully offline operation | Supported; updates can be hosted internally and installation needs no connectivity once files are downloaded | Not supported; activation and periodic reactivation need internet access |
| Activation method | KMS or MAK | Product key and account activation |
| Core apps | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access | Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote, Access |
| Microsoft 365 services and Copilot | Not included | Not included |

How Office LTSC is activated: KMS versus MAK
This is the part that surprises first-time LTSC buyers, so it deserves its own section. The activation process for volume-licensed Office has not changed: you activate with Key Management Service, which manages activation across many devices from one host, or with a Multiple Activation Key, which activates devices one at a time.
- KMS activates many client devices from a single host, and Microsoft notes that internet connectivity is not required for KMS activation.
- MAK applies one key per device, and Microsoft notes that internet connectivity is required for MAK activation.
Installation itself is offline-friendly: once the installation files are downloaded, Microsoft states that internet connectivity is not required to install Office LTSC 2024, and that updates can be hosted on-premises for disconnected networks. For a small team, a Professional Plus key covering 5 PCs sidesteps the KMS question entirely; for an organisation with dozens of centrally managed machines, the LTSC packs and KMS are the intended path.
System requirements and supported Windows versions
| Requirement | Office LTSC 2024 on Windows | Office LTSC 2024 on Mac |
|---|---|---|
| Processor | 1.1 GHz or faster, two cores | Intel or Apple Silicon, as supported by the three most recent versions of macOS |
| Memory | 4 GB RAM | 4 GB RAM |
| Disk space | 4 GB available | 10 GB available |
| Display | 1280 x 768; a 64-bit version is required for 4K and higher | 1280 x 768 |
| Architecture | 32-bit and 64-bit available, with 64-bit recommended for 4 GB or more of memory | 64-bit |
Office LTSC 2024 is supported on Windows 11 and Windows 10, along with Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2025. Microsoft has also been explicit that Windows 10 itself was supported only until 14 October 2025, so plan an operating system upgrade alongside an LTSC rollout. Which one should you buy?
Choose Office LTSC 2024 if...
- You are deploying across an organisation's machines and licensing through a volume agreement.
- Your environment is regulated, audited or offline, and a mid-cycle feature change is a genuine operational risk.
- You already run Group Policy, Configuration Manager or a comparable deployment stack.
- You want updates that can be mirrored onto an internal server.
Choose Office Professional Plus 2024 if...
- You are buying for yourself, a home office or a small business.
- You want the 2024 app generation at its most current and need no deployment tooling at all.
- You want one key per machine, activated the same way as any other purchase. The 5 PC Professional Plus key suits a small team that is not ready for central deployment.
Consider Microsoft 365 instead if...
If your real requirement is ongoing new features, real-time collaboration, cloud storage or Copilot, neither perpetual product will give you that. Microsoft says so directly: anyone who wants new features on an ongoing basis should move to a Microsoft 365 plan. LTSC and Professional Plus are for people who have decided that a fixed feature set is the better trade.
How to check a key before you buy
- Confirm the channel. If the listing says LTSC, expect volume licensing and KMS or MAK activation. If it does not, you are looking at the standard 2024 one-time-purchase line.
- Count the devices. Our LTSC and Professional Plus keys come in 1, 5 and 100 PC packs, while Home & Business covers one PC or one Mac.
- Check the platform. The Professional Plus and LTSC keys in our range are Windows licences. If you need a Mac, look at the Home & Business key.
- Look for the app list, not just the edition name. Publisher is not included with Office LTSC 2024, and Access is Windows-only.
- Ask how activation works before you pay, and keep the confirmation email with your key.
Where to buy
Every Microsoft Office key we sell is listed under Microsoft Office. If LTSC is your route, the Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 key for 5 PCs and the Office 2024 Pro Plus LTSC key for 100 PCs cover the multi-device side. For per-machine purchases, choose the Office 2024 Professional Plus activation key for Windows or the 5 PC Professional Plus key, and for a Mac or a mixed PC-and-Mac setup, the Office 2024 Home and Business activation key for Windows and Mac is the edition built for it. The full range sits on our Microsoft brand page if you want everything in one place.
Frequently asked questions
Is Office LTSC cheaper than Office Professional Plus?
It depends on the deal and the volume, and prices change, so compare the current listing for each key rather than assuming. The important point is that a price gap is not a shortcut to features. LTSC is not a discounted Professional Plus with the same capability, and neither product includes Microsoft 365 services.
Can I move from Office LTSC to Professional Plus later?
Downgrade rights work in the other direction and are explicitly defined. Microsoft's licensing guidance states that a customer with rights to a more recent LTSC suite may move to an earlier version of the same edition, for example from Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 down to Office Professional Plus 2019. Moving forward to a newer feature set is a purchase, not an entitlement.
Does Office LTSC include Copilot?
No. Copilot is part of specific Microsoft 365 subscription plans. Both Office LTSC 2024 and Office 2024 are standalone, one-time-purchase desktop products with no cloud-based AI tools attached.
Can I install Office LTSC on a Mac?
Only in a limited way. Microsoft offers Office LTSC Standard for Mac 2024 to volume-licensed customers, and Access is not available on macOS at all. For individual Mac buyers in our range, the Office 2024 Home and Business key covers one PC or one Mac.
What happens when Office LTSC 2024 reaches end of support?
Office LTSC 2024 receives five years of Mainstream Support under Microsoft's Fixed Lifecycle Policy, with no Extended Support afterwards, and Microsoft has confirmed 9 October 2029 as its end of support date. Your licence does not switch off that day, but security and quality updates stop, so plan the next release or a Microsoft 365 migration ahead of time.
Bottom line
Office LTSC 2024 and Office Professional Plus 2024 both give you perpetual Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, OneNote and Access with no subscription attached. LTSC is the choice for organisations that need volume licensing, centralised activation and a feature set frozen at launch. Professional Plus 2024 is the choice for individuals and small teams who want the current 2024 generation on a specific machine.
